Steps Towards Permaculture and Sustainability: Our Rain Collection and Conservation

From a Thatch Roof

We were told that it was impossible to capture rainwater from thatch! Loving a challenge, we came up with an effective way to do so! Posts support drainage pipes, just below the thatch roof, and feed rainwater into a tank, with netting sifting off any drifting straw. The stored water is much needed in the drier months in both the nursery and vegetable garden.

From Tin Roofs

At Round the Bend farm, rainwater is captured from the massive tin roofs over the shed and staff residence….

….and guided by pipes, also supported on poles, into our reservoir….

….after a couple of storms our reservoir is almost full!
