Kingfisher Country Estate: The story behind it
WELCOME to KINGFISHER FARM HEALTH RETREAT in the Waterberg
Near BELA BELA (previously WARMBATHS) just 2 hours from Johannesburg and even closer to Pretoria
A Divine venue for down-to-earth spiritual gatherings, as well as private celebrations!
I had a vision in 1990, telling me to find some land in a hilly location, with water, within 3 hours of Johannesburg (South Africa). It was to be developed into a self-sustaining health retreat. A great idea, but, at the time, I had just gone through a divorce, had very little money, no home, but two delightful sons, then 5 and 7 years. My only material asset was a piece of land in the Wilderness, bought for R6,000 in 1982. Eight years later I’d inherited it, along with a R20,000 bond/mortgage (a lot of money in those days!) through the divorce settlement! The temptation to sell was enormous, but Unseen Forces told me to wait until offered a million! Impossible, I thought, but, sure enough, 15 years later, the land was sold for R1,000,000 finally making the vision possible.
It took a while to find our piece of ‘Heaven on Earth’ but eventually, in 2007, John, my now husband, and I were guided to KINGFISHER FARM and fell immediately in love with it! Its dam, river frontage and natural springs at the foot of undulating protea covered hills, and being only 2 hours from Johannesburg were just as predicted! Furthermore the 41 hectares has forests, active bee hives and the most incredible energy vortexes, whilst its buildings and outhouses are an absolute delight!
For 7 frenetic months, 19 builders, 26 thatchers, a glazier, plumber and a host of other souls set about converting the Stables and River Cottage into simple, but comfortable, en-suite accommodation; the Shed into a charming Studio / Community Room; the Barn into a cozy communal Dining Room; whilst an Aga (wood / anthracite stove) was installed in the adjoining kitchen. In addition, a 4 bedroom dwelling was built to provide rooms for the Farm Assistants, as well as 2 more rooms for guests, all of which are serviced by solar power. The outcome is that, there is now comfortable accommodation for at least 14 guests (sharing) with a choice of beautiful spaces to present seminars and workshops. Additional accommodation for another 8 people (sharing) is now available in a 4 bed-roomed Farmhouse on our neighbouring farm, Round the Bend (please see Round the Bend for more information).
Our conscious choice to live off the national electricity grid means that generators, solar energy and donkeys (wood burning furnaces) provide power and heat the pure water that comes straight from the ground. It is indeed a natural paradise!
